As the Greek News has reported, no other issue has aroused the same passions both in Greece and in the diaspora as the Macedonian issue. For the last three decades, this foreign policy issue has: brought down a government in Greece; shaped Greek party politics (with parties – and even personalities within parties – trying to outflank each other when it comes to championing the issue); represented the low point in bilateral US-Greek relations (when President Bush recognized FYROM as “Macedonia” in 2004). Both polls and protests demonstrate the intensity of feeling when it comes to this issue.
